Royal Icing Academy: Cupcake Island
Textile screen print design for boutique cakery, The Royal Icing Academy.
The Queen of sugary delights, Tanja from Royal Icing Academy, approached me to design the very first in a series of tea towels for purchase in her boutique cakery, The Royal Icing Academy.
Research into vintage advertisements, the cultural associations, the characters of pop culture and historical figures with connections to cakes inspired a design that captured Tanja’s creative approach to her work – always with an appreciation for humour.
What more magical than the idea of Cupcake Island ...
"Once upon a time, on a far away island, there lived all things sweet, sugar-coated and a little bit strange. Strong robots roamed alongside men made of marshmallow. Strawberry Shortcake, the Bride of Frankenstein and the Devil himself were cake-fiends and also neighbours to wild tigers, mermaids and romance-ravished couples. Living upon the delicious tiers of the remote, and to some, forbidden, Cupcake Island, these characters show us how wonderful cake is – if made of chocolate, then it’s definitely an aphrodisiac, but regardless of flavour (including the traditional sweedish Tiger Cake!) it has the power to captivate royalty (à la Marie Antoinette) and transport us all to a land of wonder and dreamy delight. Life is sweet on Cupcake Island and nothing beats a slice of good cake, not even a dance with Mr Universe."
The design has delighted store customers and caught attention on social media.
