Mud House Wines
Brand identity and packaging design for established New Zealand winery, Mud House.
ROLE: Art direction & design
A favourite upon dinner tables throughout New Zealand, Mud House wines presented the challenge of updating their brand identity and packaging.
A "challenge" because 200,000 capsules had already been printed with a re-worked logotype created by a previous studio. The task therefore was to create a standalone icon/logo that worked with the existing logotype seamlessly while incorporating the logo set into a package design in a way that looked considered and beautiful.
Complimenting the strong lines within the existing logotype and drawing upon indigenous motifs from Maori moko patterns, a fresh logo mark was created intertwining the letterforms 'M' and 'H' in a way that was truly 'New Zealand'. The Nikau Palm inspired a base pattern for the label and carton design, adding dynamic texture to offset the label information. The design needed to encompass a 'classic' range of red and white varietals and a top-tier 'estate' range for single block editions.
Premium print finishes including pearl foiling, high build glosses and capsule embossing were used to bring a modern shine to an old classic, elevating it from a rough diamond to a jewel to place on the dining table.
The carton design and production for the Mud House Reserve range won a Gold Pride in Print Award 2011.
